I often hear people say that.  They would like to show their kids.  But you need to be REALLY prepared for breeding.  Most breeders have had experience with breeding by being raised on a farm where life and death are common occurances or they were raised in a home where the family bred some kind of animal...or nursing perhaps.

For example; do you KNOW when a dam is in distress?

How long should a female be in hard labour before calling the vet?

What IS hard labour anyway?

What if the pup comes out backwards?

What if the dam can't push a puppy out?  Do I go in with my fingers?

What if the pup's not breathing?  How do I know if it's really dead?

Mother yorkie Jael had five healthy pups.  The last one needed lots of assistance from me.  I took her to the vet because I knew she had more pups by feeling around her belly.  Here she is being prepped for a c-section where she had two more live pups and one dead one.

What if the dam starts hemorraging?

What do I do with the pups while I'm at the vet for hours?

Do I have to keep them warm?

What if a pup has cleft pallet; what do I do with it?                   This pup was barely alive and needed an hour of resusitation before it was ok to give it back to Jael.

How do I cut the umbilical cord?  How close to the body?  What if it won't stop bleeding?

What if a pup is deformed but still breathing?  This dead pup didn't stand a chance.  It died while still developing.

What if the intestines are outside the body of the pup and it's still alive?

How do I put it out of its misery?

How do I clean up the pup?

Etc. etc. etc.

And trust me, they NEVER deliver their pups when it's convenient!  Always at 3 or 4 am.  LOTS of work.
